Sauna FAQs

What should I bring with me?

Bring two towels – one to sit on and the other to dry yourself with. Swimwear, a water bottle to stay hydrated – top ups are available – and something comfy to change into afterwards. A changing robe and flip-flops or Crocs can be handy, too and if you plan to dip in the Lake a pair of aqua shoes are advisable to protect your feet.

Can I go nude in the sauna?

Sorry, no. We’re not *that* kind of sauna.

Is there a place to cool off?

Absolutely. Our sauna is located beside the stunning Lake of Menteith which is an ideal dipping spot. *Please note, dipping in the Lake is done entirely at your own risk*. We are also planning to introduce an outdoor cold water shower for guests who don’t fancy braving the open water.

How long should I stay in the sauna?

Listen to your body. Most people enjoy 10–15 minutes per round, followed by a cool down. Repeat as you like. Stay hydrated and if you feel dizzy or unwell you must leave the sauna immediately and alert a member of our team.

Is your Wild Sauna private or shared?

It depends on your booking. We have social sessions where guests book a seat in the sauna that can be shared with up to an additional 7 guests. It is possible to book the whole sauna for a private session, giving guests exclusive use from one hour to a full day. There is a maximum capacity of 10 guests for private sessions.

How hot does it get?

The temperature in the sauna ranges between 70–90°C (160–195°F), but it can be adjusted a little depending on the session and what feels comfortable for everyone. It is important to keep the door closed as much as possible to avoid allowing too much heat to escape.

Can children use the sauna?

Sorry, our sauna is an adults-only space for now, but we may revisit this later in the year.

Is alcohol allowed?

For safety reasons, you will not be permitted to enter the sauna if you have consumed alcohol before a session and drinking alcohol during a session will result in being asked to leave the sauna. No refunds will be issued in either of these cases.

What’s the “leave no trace” approach?

It means we leave the space as we found it or better. Take all your belongings with you, don’t leave litter, and treat the land and water with care.

What if I feel unwell inside?

Leave the sauna right away, cool down, drink water, and let a member of our team know. Sauna sessions should feel relaxing and should not lead to guests feeling dizzy, faint, or uncomfortable.

Can I talk in the Sauna?

Of course, all we ask is that for social sauna sessions, guests are mindful that many people come to the sauna to relax, reflect, or unwind. It’s okay to chat but keep voices low and avoid contentious topics of conversation – the sauna is not the place for ‘heated discussions’.

Can I add logs to the wood burning stove?

No, please leave this to us. We want your sauna experience to be as enjoyable and safe as possible which is why we will keep the stove stocked throughout your session.

Can I pour water on the rocks?

Of course, one ladle of water at a time should be enough – but before you add any water, please check with your fellow sauna users first as additional steam may create uncomfortable conditions for them. Too much water on the rocks can also reduce the temperature of the sauna, so finding a happy medium is important.

Are Sauna Guests permitted to use the facilities in the hotel?

Of course. Sauna guests are welcome to use the restrooms in the hotel but please don’t use these spaces to change out of wet clothing. We will be working in partnership with Karma Lake of Menteith to offer special events and promotions throughout the year and all sauna guests will receive a generous 15% discount off food and beverages in the hotel’s award-winning bar and restaurant.
